My Life at Half-a-Century

This blog is an expression of what is on my mind as I enter a new part of my life. I have lived over a half-century now and feel compelled to reflect and to record the coming together of my mind, body and spirit in a way that I have not experienced before. Much has been stripped away. I am raw, yet comforted. It is admittedly self-indulgent. But, what the hell--it’s my blog.

About Me

Yvonne
I am, as a good friend of mine used to say, “just that little black girl from the country with no hair.” And, I am, at bottom just that. Growing up in the country. Troy, MO, pop. 2500 at the time, the Future Farmers and Homemakers of America, traveling from town to town to play basketball in the winter and go to the “colored” picnics in the summer contributed greatly to who I have turned out to be. My appreciation for nature, my love of camping and stargazing were all hardwired into me on those beautiful days and nights in the country where nature wasn’t a destination--it was the context of our lives. So was my grandparent’s farm--the clapboard house, wood stoves (for heat and cooking) the outhouse, the chickens, hogs, milking cows, churning butter, mules for plowing our two-acre vegetable garden and picking blackberries on the banks of the Cuiver River provided the backdrop of my life. Peace, Yvonne
